We've just had the first casting announcement for one Game of Thrones prequel series, but George R.R. Martin has hinted at what another might be about.

While posting on his Not A Blog page to celebrate the casting of Naomi Watts in The Long Night, Martin also gave a small update on the status of the other spin-offs. Originally five were in development, before Jane Goldman's script (which she worked on alongside Martin) was ordered to pilot, but the author writes a couple of others are still possible:

"There are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of FIRE & BLOOD when it is released on November 20, though."

Fire & Blood is set to be a two-volume history of House Targaryen, including previously written content and some new material, detailing the rise and fall of one of Westeros' most important houses. Starting some 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the book will chronicle that Targaryens from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III, aka Aegon the Dragonbane.

That part of the history spans just over 150 years, and includes two crucial events that have been pegged as contenders for a prequel series: Aegon's conquest of Westeros, and the Targaryen Civil War, better known as the Dance of the Dragons. Both are high on fans' wish lists, and since Martin is drawing a line between Fire & Blood and an in-development spin-off, there's a good chance at least one of those is being worked on at present, although whether either moves forward is likely still some way off.
