The very first episode of Game of Thrones opened with mysterious, icy creatures killing the living. Now, eight years and 69 episodes later, those dead have come to Winterfell's door.

The Long Night gives us what is the show's biggest battle to date - we've heard a lot about that 55-night shoot and so on - which, understandably, brings with it a hell of a lot of death. It's chaotic, it's dark, and it might just stop your heart, but who succumbs to the God of Death?

The battle kicks off with the Dothraki horde, wielding flaming arakhs thanks to Melisandre, charging the army of the dead, and seemingly all of them falling. A number of Unsullied, who are the next line of defence, fall too, although Grey Worm somehow survives.

The first named death we see is that of Eddison Tollett, who gets stabbed shortly after saving Samwell Tarly. Edd was always likely to die - it's a surprise he made it this far - but it's fitting that he got to go out saving one of his brothers.

As the action moves inside Winterfell, the deaths start to get a little heavier. Lyanna Mormont FIGHTS A WIGHT GIANT, which obviously isn't good for her as she gets crushed to death, but she does manage to go out killing the aforementioned wight giant.

Also inside Winterfell we follow Arya Stark as she runs through the halls (that sequence from the trailers) away from some wights, eventually joining up with the Hound and Beric Dondarrion. With the numbers almost overwhelming, Beric, who gets stabbed multiple times, sacrifices himself so that the other two can get away. They meet Melisandre, who reminds Arya of her "brown eyes, green eyes, blue eyes" line from Season 3, with Arya then running off.

Daenerys is left stranded on the battlefield, before being saved by Jorah Mormont. The two struggle on against the wights, with both killing a fair few, before the numbers become too much and Jorah, quite fittingly, dies protecting his Khaleesi.

In the Godswood, Theon and the Ironborn attempt to defend Bran, but it's to no avail when the Night King turns up, with the leader of the White Walkers killing Theon himself. He then strides up to a defenceless Bran, and as we think there must be some last minute save, Arya jumps down. The Night King grabs her by the throat, seemingly stopping her, before she drops her dagger, catches it with her other hand, and stabs him...

... And he dies! Yes, the Night King is dead, killed by none other than Arya Stark. With him go all of the other White Walkers and wights (including Viserion), and the army of the dead is no more.

There's still time for one last death after that, with Melisandre taking off her necklace, revealing her true age once more, and then dying.
