With a rule that lasted for over 500 years, the Roman Empire is one of the most successful and formidable empires that has ever existed in the history of human existence. Born out of the fall of the Greek Empire it's reign can be traced as far back as 31 B.C. and at it's strongest point dominated over an area of 5 million square kilometers; from Britain across Europe to the Middle East. As feared and supreme as they were however, there were still those people who dared to stand up and fight back against Roman invasion, and even at times attempted to exercise their own plans for western control. Fierce and savage, these so called rebels were some of the most uncompromising and ruthless warriors to have lived. To the Romans they were simply known as Barbarians.

Analysing the rise and fall of the Roman Empire from the perspective of some of the most eminent Barbarian figures of the time, The History Channel has launched a new historic drama docuseries - Barbarians Rising. In the 8 part series which premiered on 31st August, viewers are told the true historical events and stories behind some of the most legendary warriors. The fully dramatised portrayals include those of Carthaginian commander Hannibal, leader of one of the prominent slave uprising movements - Spartacus, and Queen of the British Celtic Iceni - Boudica - whose bravery delivered a resounding blow to the Roman rule in Britain at the time.

The coincide with this fascinating new series the History Channel have also put together a fun interactive Barbarian Card Generator that allows you to see whether you have the skills it would have taken to be a successful Barbarian leader over 2000 thousand years. After a short set of questions you will be bestowed with your very own card that lists your Barbarian name and set of attributes, which you can then use to compare yourself to some of history's finest combatants.
