Season 1 was what started it all, and it's very clear they were trying to push the envelope as much as possible from the start. It is absolutely astonishing going back and watching the first season of this show and seeing just how much it has transformed over the years.

There's a few things missing from the inaugural season of Sunny however. One of those very important things missing from Season 1 is Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds. Frank is such an important addition to the gang and to the flow of the show that when you go back and watch Season 1 his absence is very obvious.

The other thing missing from Season 1 are the distinct personalities of all the characters. Dennis isn't the crazy sociopath we know and love, Mac isn't the wannabe badass, Charlie isn't the king of rats and Dee isn't the bird we know and love. These traits would take a couple seasons to truly take their final form, but the complete absence of them in the first season doesn't do it any favors.

Even with everything going against it, there's no denying that this season definitely has its moments. Paddy's Pub becoming a gay bar tops the list, along with Charlie pretending to have cancer.

Season 1 is but a shell of what the show has turned into. It's still a good season, but it doesn't deliver the same kind of punch that later seasons would.
