The Flash Season 5: 6 Problems It Must Fix

5. Iris West-Allen's Reporting Career

You have to give credit where it's due: Season 4 of The Flash definitely improved upon Season 3 when it came to honouring Iris West-Allen. In a single season, Iris went from a damsel in distress who needed saving to the undisputed leader of Team Flash.

However, it's not all good. Though she did a fantastic job, the fact that she had this role was problematic - and it's a problem that extends beyond The Flash. All Arrowverse shows are too focused on maintaining their status quo, so when they want to give a character something to do, they automatically shoehorn them into the superhero team, just so they can be present for all the major scenes. Thus, when The Flash wanted to make up for its previous mistreatment of Iris, the writers immediately thought to place her on Team Flash.

However, there was a more obvious solution that fans have been calling for since the very beginning: Iris' journalism career. Not only would this pay tribute to the comic book iteration of the character, it would allow Iris to be her own woman - away from the team. Having already teased the return of her journalistic roots in the second half of Season 4, now is the right time to finally pull the trigger on it.

Yes, Iris proved to be a formidable leader of Team Flash, but she's a journalist at heart and it's about time that the show starts exploring this plot thread, allowing her to fulfil her true potential.
