Although Jon Favreau had previously stated that the Mandalorian would be set three years after Return of the Jedi, he gave a different date at the TV show's panel (via Slash Film).

"This series takes place about five years after Return of the Jedi... This is a character you’ve never met before in a period of time that you’ve never seen."

It's great to hear an exact date for the show, especially given it's now confirmed to take place in such an untraversed period in the Star Wars canon. Comics like Shattered Empire and books and games like Aftermath and Battlefront II have all depicted the immediate aftermath of the second Death Star's destruction, but Star Wars fans are really yet to see a story take a more advanced position in the timeline.

Not only does it grant more freedom to The Mandalorian in terms of what it can accomplish, but also in what it can contribute to the still relatively burgeoning expanded universe. There's decades' worth of stories to mine in the period between VI and VII, so one can only imagine what'll happen come Autumn.
