The Simpsons: 15 Most Watched Episodes Of All Time

1. Bart Gets An F - 33.6m

Fox

Season 2, Episode 1

Considering that this was the first episode in the Simpsons' second season it's not at all surprising that it hit a viewing high, but the 33.6 million Americans who tuned in were treated to one of the best episodes of all time.

When Bart is threatened with repeating the fourth grade, he gets one final chance to prove that he should progress, praying for a miracle to help him: God obliges and closes the school for a day thanks to a snowstorm, but just as Bart is about to go and play in it, he is reminded of his prayer by the ever-observant Lisa and forced to study.

Though he ultimately fails the final test, he shows applied knowledge and earns himself a D, and we see the start of the odd relationship with Mrs Krabappel that was so heartbreakingly ended when voice actor Marcia Wallace. When that sad moment came, it was episodes like this one that came swimming back into memory as a high-point.

Extra points for the perhaps unintentional climactic line of "that D belongs to God".
