The Simpsons Season 28: 7 Things It's Got Right (So Far)
6. A Grandpa Episode
Speaking of Havana Wild Weekend - once again, one of the better decisions this year by the writing team was to focus on Grandpa for an episode. Gorgeous Grandpa a few years back was a great little outing, and this year, following Grandpa to Cuba wasn't a bad idea either.
Frankly,
Abe is one of the funniest characters on the show, and has been since its inception. He's the one character who has never declined (except, you know, in health), has remained consistent, and can be counted on for a laugh out loud moment.
His reaction to having an "accident" on the rug ("I'm 86 years old and falling apart like toast in a dishwasher") followed by Marge putting newspapers under him when he sits down starts a spot-on tale of how we treat the elderly, keeping them out of sight and out of mind until something goes wrong and we're guilted into jumping into action. After the VA hospital says they can see him in "five minutes... twenty-three years from now" Abe looks to cheap medical care in Cuba (rather than Canada, since that "commie Trudeau is in charge").
Frankly, Havana Wild Weekend was much smarter than it seemed on first viewing, and while it's a little reminiscent of Midnight Rx (Grandpa going to Canada for cheap medication), this episode does stand on its own.
