Since its inception in 2010, AMC's The Walking Dead, based on a series of graphic novels, has rapidly become a television phenomenon, consistently breaking records for viewing figures of a cable show, with Season 3's premiere attracting 10.9 million viewers in America alone. The series focuses on a group of survivors (led by Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes) in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Sure, it's a cheesy premise, and one that has been done hundreds of times before in everything from 28 Days Later to Shaun Of The Dead, but it works well as the backdrop to a drama that focuses mainly on the relationships and struggles of the survivors, who take centre stage over the 'walkers' (as zombies are known in the show), who are used to create suspense rather than drive the plot. Much of the shows appeal lies in its unpredictability, as established characters can die at any time as they try to survive in an increasingly desolate world, where other groups of survivors can pose as much of a threat to their safety as the undead hordes.
