Since its inception in 2010, AMC’s The Walking Dead, based on a series of graphic novels, has rapidly become a television phenomenon, consistently breaking records for viewing figures of a cable show, with Season 3′s premiere attracting 10.9 million viewers in America alone.
The series focuses on a group of survivors (led by Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes) in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Sure, it’s a cheesy premise, and one that has been done hundreds of times before in everything from 28 Days Later to Shaun Of The Dead, but it works well as the backdrop to a drama that focuses mainly on the relationships and struggles of the survivors, who take centre stage over the ‘walkers’ (as zombies are known in the show), who are used to create suspense rather than drive the plot.
Much of the shows appeal lies in its unpredictability, as established characters can die at any time as they try to survive in an increasingly desolate world, where other groups of survivors can pose as much of a threat to their safety as the undead hordes.
So without further ado, here is a rundown of some of the greatest and goriest deaths that the show has thrown at us to date, ready for the premiere of the second half of the show’s third season on February the 10th (February the 15th in the UK).
This article contains huge spoilers (obviously) for anybody that is not completely up to date with the show (up to Season 3, Episode 8).

Very good choices, Sir.
None of these deaths effected me as much as Dale’s. I’m a little flabbergasted that he didn’t even make the list. I might have cheered when Shane and Lori died, but I cried like a baby when Dale passed.
the man who play Dale, Jefferey DeMunn, wanted to leave after Frank Darabont, director of season 1 and good friend to him, was fired from the show. i wish he didn’t leave cause Dale was one of my favourite characters in the comics, and remains to be my #1 most hated death in The Walking Dead, and to note the fact he died much later in the comics
Great article, and also I find it really funny that the main picture has two dead characters from this list on there. And what about Dale? I completely forgot about Jenner, but Dale’s death still makes me sad.
Great list, but Dales exit was affecting because it was anticlimactic,it brought home how ordinary and mundane death actually is.
I agree with Trish. Most of the choices are good on this list but I would put Dale up there on number 3 or 4. This is because I felt his death had more weight on the hold party and how everyone reacted after that.
