Community is a show that has reached cult status before even being taken off the air. In 3 seasons, the writers have crafted a set of characters that are both hilarious and endearing. But outside of the main group, the show has done a great job of bringing in guest characters, often with wonderful results.
So in this article, I wanted to look at the best guest roles of the shows first three seasons. I didn’t include any recurring characters (sorry Leonard and Starburns), and looked at not only the quality of the guest star’s performance, but also the comedy and story that their presence brought out. Putting these in order was extremely difficult, and an argument could be made for many of them to be number one.
10. Jack Black (Buddy, Season 1-“Investigative Journalism”)
Jack Black is fairly polarizing actor. Some people find him hilarious while others can’t stand him. So if you fall in the latter camp, this may not have been a highlight for you. But watching Jack Black doing Jack Black things as Buddy, a classmate of the group, as he tries to join the group is incredibly enjoyable.
Whether he’s making up songs, or trying to bring back “You go girl”, his failure to charm the group is both great fodder for comedy, but also a great meta-commentary on the idea that the group seems to be the center of this school full of people.

Very nice! I forgot about that LeVar episode. Brilliant.
A personal favorite of mine would be Blake from Workaholics, even though he only had like one semi-funny line.
Disappointed in the lack of Martin Starr.
I would have loved to put Martin Starr on here (Freaks & Geeks and Party Down are two of my favorites), but I didn’t think he was really used all that well. If it was best guest actors to appear on the show, he’d be at the top of the list.
Nick Kroll? He’s great as the German foosball player.
He was awesome. Such a great list though. I never thought about all the great guest stars they’ve had.
