Jimmy McGovern’s well received “The Accused” is back on our screens tonight as the third season begins, and there is a shock in store for viewers straight from the get go.
Sean Bean is often associated with the sword wielding macho man Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones, and also as warrior Boromir in the Lord of the Rings.
Which is why it will probably come as a surprise to learn that the actor is trying his hand at portraying a cross-dressing poetry lover in McGovern’s gritty courtroom drama.
My day, Bean portrays English teacher Simon, but by night, the frock, pearls and stilettos come out of the closet to complete the getup for alter-ego Tracie.
And it isn’t long until Simon/Tracie ends up having an affair with Tony, a satellite and aerial engineer, which culminates in a terrible crime of passion.
Actor Sean Bean told the BBC:
“I’ve wanted to work on a Jimmy McGovern drama for a while and I think this cracking script really delivers a powerful, emotional drama for the audience.”
The show begins with the Accused being lead into the docks for sentencing, and it is then that viewers see what it is they are standing trial for as the plot unravels before the final verdict.
Will Simon be found guilty, or will he be granted his freedom? Find out tonight as the new series begins on BBC1 at 9pm.
