Why We Should Tune Into BBC's THE VOICE Coming 2012
Hit American 'X-Factor with a twist' show (such as blind auditions!!) is coming to these shores next year.
The Voice, the new singing competition hitting the BBC in 2012. Originally a smash hit in the Netherlands, The Voice has just finished its highly successful run on NBC in the U.S. with Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine (Maroon 5 front man) and Blake Sheldon (Country Superstar) filling the judges swivelling chairs. The show has proved so popular with audiences that auditions for the second season (airing this winter) have already begun. How does it work?Okay so it works much the same as other singing competitions but with a new twist, the blind auditions. The judges/coaches sit with their backs to the contestants while they perform. Therefore they have to judge them purely on their voice. If a judge likes what they hear they hit their button, turn their chair and get to put a face to the voice. Once a judge turns their chair it means the contestant is through and on that judges team, no majority needed here. But if more than one judge turns their chair, its the contestant who gets to make all the decisions, picking which judge they would like to coach them. Once each of the judges has filled the eight spots on their team they move on to the next stage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shvEJE_jZaE Next is the battle round where two singers from each team are paired up and have to perform together on the same track, with their coach deciding which one will be eliminated. This leaves each of the coaches with four singers who move on to the live rounds. Again the live rounds will be familiar however with one slight difference. Every week a singer is voted off each team until each coach is left with a finalists and then its down to the public decide on the winner. Why should you tune in? Well first the blind auditions, okay its a bit gimmicky, but hey its different. Also all those auditioning (at least on the US version) could actually sing. Okay it wasnt as funny as watching clearly delusional people screeching whilst believing they were the next Rihanna, but at least you dont feel as if youre exploiting people or patronising them by going well I didnt expect that, which is actually code for I cant believe someone so unattractive can sing so beautifully. Plus with everyone able to sing its much harder to guess who will get through. Secondly the voting process, if a judge wants someone they get them, no deliberating or voting, no long drawn out process of Im going to say . (dramatic pause while everyone at home goes yes, yes, just say yes, we all know your going to put them through, just SAY YES ALREADY) . yes. If two or more judges do want a contestant for their team the contestant can choose, it is interesting to see the judges on the other side, trying to get themselves picked. Plus with the judges choosing the singers for their team it feels like they are more invested in the contestants. Finally the judges (if the BBC manage to attract the calibre of judges that the US version did), judges who are actually highly successful artist performing right now and cover a range of musical genres. Also the judges perform together and with their contestants through out the shows, as a kind of get out there and prove you can actually sing and why you should be allowed to judge others. Rumoured judges for the British version predictably include Danni Minogue and Cheryl Cole following their very public dismissal from the X-Factor. Other names include Adele (how awesome would that be), Cee Lo Green again, Robbie Williams and George Michael. Will you be tuning into watch The Voice? Who would you like to see in the judges chairs?
