10 Most Anticipated Wrestling Matches Of All-Time (That Actually Happened)

As we still await The Undertaker vs Sting... let's remind ourselves of once totally unlikely dream wrestling bouts that did eventually take place!

One of the most fascinating aspects of professional wrestling is the dream match. Years and even decades ago, having anywhere from two to three major national promotions prevented the idea of pro wrestling juggernauts locking horns on a grand stage. As competition ramped up in the mid 1990's, both the WWE and WCW stepped up their games, trying to accumulate as much talent as possible to get the competitive edge over the other, thus making fantasy matches more of a reality. After WWE's acquisition of WCW in 2001, the WWE's roster gradually expanded, adding a slew of marquee names in order to bolster their cards. This was on display in 2004, when half of the Royal Rumble entrants would eventually be World Champions. The WWE's purchase of its top competition allowed the company to promote some of the most anticipated matches in wrestling history, many of which fans never expected to actually happen. Who would have imagined in the heat of the Monday Night Wars that long time legend Hulk Hogan would face off with surging superstar The Rock? Who would have thought the Rock would come back a decade later to take on John Cena, who had assumed the WWE torch from him? "Never say never" is a popular quip within the world of pro wrestling, and these matches showed us why.
