10 Best Wrestling Referees Ever

9. Jack Doan

Up next we have the man who introduced Chad Patton to the world of WWE (WWF at the time), Jack Doan.

Before being released in 2013, Jack Doan was the second longest tenured referee on the roster (behind Mike Chioda), and has been a part of some of the most memorable matches in WWF/E history.

If I close my eyes tight enough I can still hear Gorilla Monsoon talking about him back in the day...

What isn't known about Doan is that he truly worked from the bottom up in WWF to become a referee. He started off as a truck driver, played music at the shows, carried the robes of the superstars and also worked as part of ring crew. This led to him becoming a part-time referee, which quickly became his full-time gig.

Doan memorably was at the centre of Vader's TV debut, when the terrifying mountain of a man put a pounding on the poor tiny ref. Monsoon came to Doan's rescue but got an avalanche for his troubles, an avalanche that saw Doan put out of action for a number of weeks.

Jack Doan is arguably most remembered however for what may very well be the most epic slide in the history of professional wrestling, or at least the best one that didn't involve Paul London.

I can't take my eyes off it.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
