The hype train for the Trump/McMahon showdown barreled full speed ahead through sports and entertainment media outlets in the precious weeks before WrestleMania 23, lending generous coverage to WWE's Super Bowl equivalent. The marketing worked wonders on a curious audience, as diehards and casuals alike bought into the frenzy, helping WWE establish a new pay-per-view high-mark.

In all, WrestleMania 23 drew 1.2 million buys on pay-per-view. The previous record was set just two years earlier, when WrestleMania 21 was good for 1.085 million buys, meaning WrestleMania 23 broke the mark by approximately 115,000 buys.

In all, only eight pay-per-views in wrestling history have topped the 1 million buy-mark, and naturally, all are WrestleManias. The only wrestling pay-per-view to top what 23 did was WrestleMania 28, five years later to the day.

But that's a story for another list.
