Whilst it may generally be referred to as the New Era, it would be more accurate to say we are living in the Reality Era. This isn't just referring to the many reality TV shows WWE now runs either, as the talent we watch week in and week out are closer and closer to the truth than ever before.

For this we can blame Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and others. They were men who took the wrestling industry to previously unknown heights by playing heightened versions of themselves, their own personalities turned up to 10 and then some. Gimmicks and characters began to fall by the wayside in favour of First Name Last Name stars.

A cursory glance at the 2016 Survivor Series card shows a lot of reality-style performers. Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn and the rest are all steeped in reality, competitors looking to rise to the top of the competition through hard work and a little bit of luck.

Whatever happened to a convict who wanted revenge for bad treatment in prison? What about an Arab American, eager to be accepted for who he is not who the media says he is? We're so steeped in reality that even a man called DOLPH ZIGGLER is a straight up pro wrestler and nothing else.

Here are 10 gimmicks WWE should consider bringing back in 2017, along with the men (and women) who should play them.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
