In the wrestling business, things are not always going to go the way you planned. Matches follow scripts, in that a number of spots are planned, practiced and then performed. There have been many instances in the past where someone has stumbled over themselves or not correctly set up for a specific spot, resulting in a botch, a painfully evident mess up.
Now this is a light hearted take on those botches… mostly. The most damage any one of these have caused is an unceremonious halt to a wrestler’s push. This is a collection of botches that’ll make you laugh, cry and more importantly, cringe. Of course, botches aren’t always as innocent as these, some result in career threatening injuries. But we’re not here to talk about that.
Honourable Mention: TNA
Of course, it wouldn’t be an article on wrestling botches without TNA. There are many reasons why TNA is car crash television, a wrestling business that will never be able to reach the heights of WWE. Personally, I can’t watch TNA without cringing due to their dire storylines. But if you look at their roster, you’ll see that it’s flooded with WWE rejects or has-beens that don’t belong in the ring (including Rampage Jackson and Tito Ortiz).
TNA is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Whether they’ve championed the worst gimmick matches imaginable (I mean seriously, a reverse battle royal?) or allowing Jeff Hardy to continue in the company after coming out for their headline pay-per-view match intoxicated. Everything reeks desperation. They know they pale in comparison to WWE, as evident by their disastrous attempt to compete with Monday Night Raw.
But back to this reverse battle royal. Sixteen wrestlers stood outside the ring. The first eight to get into the ring, yes you heard me right, GET INTO THE RING, would win and therefore compete in a normal over-the-top-rope battle royal. What ensued was five minutes or wrestlers awkwardly standing around waiting for their spot as they haven’t been booked to win. It was magical.
