What you are about to read is not going to be a clever article about wrestling history and Terrys place within it, nor is it going to be a guide to the career of Mr. Funk (for that, you can read his autobiography More Than Just Hardcore available from Sports Publishing). No, this piece is purely the words of a lifelong pro wrestling fan as he unashamedly gushes about one of the greats of the business, Wrestlings Living Legend, Terry Funk. ...And if you have a problem with that, well then you can Funk off right now. As I type this, there is an action figure of Terry Funk standing on my desk. It is actually a pretty solid likeness, too. Just like the real Terry Funk, the figure is tough as old plastic, donkeys years old and very well loved. He has the same air of class and determination about him that the real Terry Funk does. His joints even creak when I move them. Of course, success in pro wrestling is not measured by how many action figures they make of you; I was just illustrating a point. To become a legend in professional wrestling requires more than just championships (although they definitely help), it needs more than good ticket sales and, in the grand scheme of things, even a healthy win/loss record is fairly irrelevant. ...Attaining such a status requires guts, talent, charisma and, above all, heart. The fans have to get wholly behind a star, or else hate his guts completely and unashamedly and, for that to happen, something about their presence needs to connect an audience to them. Look up any of the above traits in the dictionary and youll see a picture of Terry Funk. ...And if your dictionary doesnt have pictures, then draw them in there, dammit!
