10 Things You Learn As A WWE Creative Writer

6. You Get Pitched A Ton Of Bad Ideas.

As a creative team member, it’s common for your phone to ring with pitches from wrestlers who either aren’t on the main roster or who are unhappy with their current character. In the interest of self-preservation, lower and mid-card talent will pitch a ton of ideas to the creative team in hopes of becoming the next breakout superstar. Some of these ideas are pretty good and can be developed into characters. Others, not so much.

Sometimes, ideas were pitched about storylines or specific match ideas. They weren’t all winners.

Keep in mind, ideas that made the cut at this time included Paul Birchall being both a pirate and ambiguously incestuous, Eugene being developmentally disabled and the somewhat racist “Cryme Tyme” gimmick.

That being said, imagine the pitched ideas that never made it further than a phone call. Here’s a couple:

Domino (Of the “Deuce and Domino” tag team) as a street-wise gangster rapper persona with a skinny white guy manager. From “Happy Days” to “Boyz n The Hood”? Nah.

Some may have read about this in interviews, but I remember when the idea was first floated of calling Mark Henry “The Silverback”. I recall shrinking in my chair at that one.

I did support Melina’s movie star gimmick though, because I got to be one of the paparazzi who followed her to the ring… Amazing.
