10 Times A Special Guest Referee Actually Improved A Wrestling Match

10. The Mega Powers Vs. The Mega Bucks (SummerSlam 1988) - Ref: Jesse Ventura

Jesse "The Body" Ventura (dressed that night as Jesse "The Casual Pirate" Ventura), who had been relegated to the announce booth for some time, was chosen as the special guest referee by the team of Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant, who declared Ventura the only "fair and neutral" option. (Villain speak for "someone we can pay off.") The announce team of Billy Graham and Gorilla Monsoon painted him as aggressively incompetent throughout the entire match, and it's glorious to hear Graham, who invented the flamboyant muscleman gimmick Ventura would later adopt, repeatedly spit, "Jesse, do you job, man." But the moment it was really necessary to have someone like Ventura officiating occurred at the end of the match, when Miss Elizabeth casually took off her skirt to distract Andre, DiBiase, Bobby Heenan and Virgil, giving her guys Hogan and Savage time to recoup on the outside of the ring. They needed a red-blooded, self-professed "sex machine" as a referee to forget the rules (forgoing the requisite 10-count) at the sight of some well-toned butt cheeks. Ventura was the perfect choice, and sold his dumbfounded excitement perfectly.
