Jim Ross is one of the greatest play-by-play commentators to ever work in the WWE. That is a fact and not up for debate. His Southern-fried style of commentary didn't just make the happenings in the ring sound better, sometimes it was the only thing that made them interesting. Sure, J.R. could sell the ever-loving hell out of a monster highlight (his hoarse screams of "THEY KILLED HIM!" are just as memorable as the actual Mick Foley fall from the cage he was describing), but it he could also grab your interest by the balls even when you didn't particularly care about what you were watching. Or at least...you didn't think you cared about what you were watching. But J.R. seemed so passionate about it, so there must be something to it. He had the ability to get over under-appreciated superstars, silly gimmicks, and even the occasional botched match like no one else. His enthusiasm, if nothing else, made you pay closer attention to what was happening. ...But the guy wasn't perfect. For instance, when the things happening in the ring were really bad, he didn't always know when to tone that enthusiasm down. Sometimes that boundless gusto could turn people off when ill-applied, and other times, when we needed a little extra fervor to be sold on an idea, J.R. simply couldn't (or wouldn't) muster it. You can't always scream yourself hoarse, after all. And considering how much utter crap had run roughshod over the WWE during J.R.'s time, it's almost unfathomable that there are only a handful of times that The Voice of the WWE wasn't able to get something over.
