10 WWE Stars Who Won The World Title Too Soon
A few cases in which the WWE might have been wise to hold their horses...
Capturing your first WWE world title is a rather special
occasion. Not that I’d know first-hand of course, but I think it’s safe to
assume that’s the case. Either way, it’s a one-of-a-kind moment that should be
handled with care.
And yet, time and again we’ve seen guys strike gold before the time was right, whether due to the fact that they weren’t quite ready yet, or possibly because they were simply deserving of a bigger stage for their moment of crowning glory.
Sometimes the results have been catastrophic, other times they’ve been far more manageable, but it’s always been a rather contentious aspect of WWE programming.
Having recently looked at some examples of wrestlers who should have won the world title sooner, now it’s time to look at the other side of the story.
This article aims to do just that as we count down 10 wrestlers whose first world titles in the WWE arrived somewhat sooner than they should have.
10. Bret Hart
I mentioned in the intro that there are a couple of reasons
why a wrestler’s first world title win might have arrived too soon; either they
weren’t quite ready for the job yet, or they were simply deserving of a bigger
stage on which to enjoy their win.
In the case of Bret Hart, we’ve got an example that falls firmly in the latter of those categories.
Bret was born to win WWE Titles, and he was born for WrestleMania main events, which is why it’s somewhat criminal that his first taste of world title glory arrived at what was essentially a house show.
In October 1992, Bret defeated Ric Flair in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at an untelevised event. Sure, taking place in Canada will have been a nice touch for Bret personally, but after eight years of service you’d think he was deserving of grander surroundings for his maiden world title victory.
A far cry from the coronation that someone like Shawn Michaels was afforded, it makes you wonder why they didn’t hold off until the following month’s Survivor Series to give Bret a rather more memorable moment in front of much more sizeable audience.
