19 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Shawn Michaels

8. He Showed Up In "No Condition To Perform" Prior To WrestleMania 17

The date was March 26, 2001. It's a famous night in wrestling because that was the night on Raw it was announced that WWE had purchased WCW. It was right before WrestleMania 17 in 2001 when Michaels was called in to Raw to do something to help build up Triple H's WrestleMania match with Undertaker that year. On the "Shawn Michaels Story" DVD, they talked about how Shawn was taking a lot of pills at the time in 2001. He had developed an addiction to painkillers over the years. When it came time to talk to him about his role on that night's edition of Raw, Shawn was apparently in no condition to perform. Michaels got in a huge argument with Triple H about it and said that they didn't talk for about a year after that. When Triple H tore his quad in May of 2001, Michaels didn't talk to him during that time either. It's not known what Shawn's role was going to be for Undertaker's match with Triple H at WrestleMania 17. Perhaps he would have been the referee of the match. It was never made public because of the condition that Michaels was in. Even though Michaels' incident that night in March of 2001 was a low point for him, it was also something that led to him trying to change his life for the better because slowly over the course of the next year that's what happened. Sometimes we have to reach rock bottom before we can get back to the top again and for Michaels that's exactly what happened.
