Tuesday's Smackdown opened with the news that Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi would be forced to vacate her title due to a knee injury. General manager Daniel Bryan subsequently booked a match for the vacant championship, which took place immediately and which Alexa Bliss won to become a two-time titleholder.

Naomi defeated Bliss to win the Smackdown Women's Championship nine days earlier at Elimination Chamber - her first championship in her five years on the main roster - but she was hurt during the course of her victory. On last week's Smackdown, Naomi announced the injury, but said that she would know more about her estimated recovery time in seven days. While no timetable was given as to her return on Smackdown, it was mentioned that she'll "probably" miss WrestleMania.

Bliss, who hadn't yet gotten her rematch with Naomi, demanded that Bryan gift her the title, but the GM booked her in a match for the vacant championship with Becky Lynch instead. Bliss ended up winning the bout and the title, distracting the referee by pulling up the ring skirt, hitting Becky in the throat, and rolling her up with a handful of tights for the three count.
