Backstage News On WWE's Decision To Make Sheamus World Champion

Find out how long WWE knew they'd be putting the title on The Celtic Warrior.

Dave Meltzer reports that the decision to crown Sheamus the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion wasn€™t made until just a few hours before the Survivor Series. Meltzer said on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that the company had been going back and forth about who should be the next World Champion before deciding on what occurred right before airtime. Apparently the reason they chose to go with Sheamus over Roman Reigns was because they didn€™t want Reigns being booed as champion. If true this begs the question why they even put the title on him to begin with. If they€™re aware that there€™s backlash against Reigns from the fans, you would think they would be willing to adapt to it rather than try to book around it. And the usual excuse of blaming the negative reaction on the city the event took place in can€™t apply here because Atlanta is not typically a €œsmark€ crowd. If you have to continuously use smoke and mirrors to prevent the man you have earmarked as your next top babyface star from being booed that should be a sign that something isn€™t working and it might be time to go in a different direction. Reigns is working hard and doing everything asked of him; it€™s unfortunate that he keeps being set up to fail.
