Did AEW Just Sh*t On Their Own Win/Loss Record Importance?
Tony Khan booked a questionable title match on the Blood & Guts episode of AEW Dynamite.
AEW like to make a big deal out of Jade Cargill's impressive 34-0 win/loss record, and rightly so. The clear insinuation from company announcers is that victories and defeats matter in All Elite Wrestling - the commentators occasionally harp on about title rankings too.
That's why Leila Grey's TBS Title shot on Wednesday's episode of Dynamite was so egregious.
The match with Cargill was Grey's 16th for the promotion, and she had a 0-15 record going in (it's now 0-16, obviously). Granted, Jade's manager Stokely Hathaway did fire out an open challenge invitation that Khan worked with by saying he'd consult the women's locker room, but Leila was a truly puzzling choice.
Surely wrestlers who are 0-15 should not be in line for title opportunities, "open challenge" circumstances or not. Come Dynamite, Cargill was booked to dispatch Grey with ease before continuing her ongoing feud with Athena.
Pre-TBS Title match, Leila had only worked two AEW bouts in 2022. One was an 80-second loss to Marina Shafir on the 22 March edition of Dark, and the other was a 58-second mauling before it at the hands of Serena Deeb on the 4 March Rampage.
Is handing out title shots to 0-15 wrestlers really the best way to sell the importance of wins/losses and title rankings?
