Whether you love him or hate him, Vince Russo is one of the most well known names in the wrestling business. While working on the creative team at WWF Russo gained fame for essentially being the father of the Attitude Era of WWF while with WCW he gained infamy for his appalling storyline ideas and terrible gimmick matches and is heralded as one of the main reasons the company was driven into the ground. Recently Russo said in an interview that the titles in both WWE and TNA were simply ‘props’ and had no real value. While this seems to have enraged the internet wrestling community it got me thinking about the various titles in the WWE and I have to admit there isn’t a lot of prestige left in many of the titles and I will explain why I think that for each title.
The Diva’s Title
Starting down the bottom of the list with the Divas Title, does it have prestige? No. and for this title I’ll go one step further. Will the Divas Title ever have prestige? I’d say no. the Divas Title is, in my opinion, a joke that degrades the already bad image of woman’s wrestling. First off, the title itself is a big pink butterfly because of course that just screams champion, I think the complain stands for itself. Secondly how long has the title existed? 4 years, and who’s held it? Maryse, Michelle McCool, Alicia Fox and Eve Torres. Not one of those named could wrestle a decent match if their lives depended on it. Now don’t get me wrong Beth Phoenix, Natalya and Mickie James all held the title and they can wrestle as well as many as their male counterparts but to my count they have held the title once a piece and one token title rein is not enough to keep this title afloat in the putrid lake of embarrassment that is the rest of the divas division. Now you may say that the Divas Title is just the Woman’s championship with a new coat of paint but Mae Young was a woman wrestler and as such did some actual wrestling, not what the current Divas are for which is dancing around whenever WWE can afford to wheel out a musically inclined celebrity as their guest host. The entire woman’s division of WWE is a mess at the moment and until WWE get more women who can actually wrestle it will get no better.

Great article. I have to say I agree with you. None of these titles should be lacking in prestige but the reality of it is that they are as it stands. I – too – am pleased with the recent history of the Intercontinental Championship. It’s good to see the belt on established superstars. As for the WWE Championship, it’s hard to consider it as prestigious as it once was based on the lone fact that it’s title belt states it’s holder as ‘Champ.’ I’ve never been a big fan of gimmick belts and I don’t dislike it because of it’s attachment to Cena. I just feel as though the company’s top championship should really be as prestigious as it used to be. It’s holder should look like a champion with a championship belt. At the moment it’s just a bling-y accessory.
Glad you liked the article. i tried not to only be negative about the WWE title based only on how it looks and i do think they are doing something good by giving CM Punk a good long run with it but it really does need a redesign. i know that there have been spoiler pics of a new design on all the dirt sheets but i think as soon as the spoilers got out WWE will probably have scrapped the idea. but i’ve been wrong before.
Michelle McCool was not that bad of a divas champion. she was actually a pretty damn good one. Great article by the way.
cheers for the positive comment. i have to say McCool wasn’t that great in my opinion, she may have been ok if she could have just faded into the ranks of the Womens champions. but she was to herald and lead the ‘divas champions’ and she judt didn’t set the bar high enough…i hope you kinda get what i mean by that.
