On the day that 'The Resurrection of jake The Snake' comes to the streaming service, Netflix has given a 10-episode order to a new show entitled 'G.L.O.W', which will be produced by Jenji Kohan of Orange Is The New Black fame.

The show itself was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is The New Black).

Why is that of any interest to you, I hear you scream? Well, the show is inspired by the very real story of the all-female wrestling promotion of the same name fro the 1980s. An acronym for the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, G.L.O.W was no Ring of Honor, a wrestling show more about looks and comedy than hammerlocks and hip-tosses, but this helped in setting it apart from the competition. It ran for four seasons on the Las Vegas Strip, this first run coming to an end in 1990.

The original cast pretty much consisted of models and actresses, but the wrestling itself was real. They were trained by Mando Guerrero (brother of Eddie), and it was on the show that Lisa Moretti (Ivory in WWF) got her first TV break.

It is this that will be coming to Netflix in the near future. The show covers the (ficitonalized) story of an out-of-work actress who gets one last chance to follow her dream via a weekly series about female wrestling. Will we see the returns of Babe the Farmer's Daughter, Jailbait and Tiffany Mellon? Probably not.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
