Paul Heyman Wanted CM Punk To End Undertaker's WrestleMania Streak In 2013

Heyman wanted Punk to win to keep Punk happy, but he didn't get his way.

Paul Heyman revealed on Chael Sonnen's "You're Welcome" podcast that he actually pitched for CM Punk to beat The Undertaker's undefeated WrestleMania streak at WrestleMania 29 in 2013. Heyman said he felt that if that happened it would have possibly led to Punk staying in WWE longer. Here's how Heyman explained it: "I actually pitched it for Punk because I thought it was the only thing that was going to keep Punk from eventually leaving WWE. Even before that match, he was itching to get out." Punk ended up losing the match clean to Undertaker in what was a fantastic matchup with Punk in the heel role and coming very close to winning. Punk ended up sitting out for a few months, then returning as a face and feuding with Heyman shortly after that. Heyman figured that if Punk got the win over Undertaker then that meant he would likely have to stay in WWE longer because they could have talked about the streak so much. Heyman said: "I figured if they (gave Punk) this victory, he needed to stay a while and capitalize on it. That idea never came to fruition. Then of course the stars were just aligned for it to be Brock." It was Brock Lesnar that broke the streak at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, which was apparently the decision of Vince McMahon and the result of that was Lesnar winning the WWE Title in dominant fashion over John Cena at SummerSlam 2014. There's no way of knowing for sure if CM Punk would have stuck around in WWE longer if he was the one to break The Undertaker's streak, but Heyman's story makes it seem possible.
