Ranking Every Hell In A Cell Match In WWE History - From Worst To Best

33 matches across 19 years, but which have been the best of the best?

When Hell in a Cell was introduced in 1997, it was supposed to be the ultimate blow-off stipulation to end only the most memorable of feuds. So I’m quite not sure that the intention was to have staged a total of 33 matches inside the structure over the course of the next 19 years.

That’s exactly the situation in which we find ourselves today though, with this Sunday’s triple main event set to take the tally to 36 matches in less than two decades.

With that many matches to look back upon, naturally there’s quite a range in quality, from the kind of contests that you regularly find yourself going back to re-watch, to the ones that you might have forgotten about even happening in the first place.

So in an attempt to separate the classics from the clangers, this article takes a trip down memory lane as we look to rank every single Hell in a Cell bout in history and determine the greatest of all time.

33. John Cena Vs. Alberto Del Rio Vs. CM Punk Vs. Dolph Ziggler Vs. Jack Swagger

On paper, John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger sounds like a pretty decent prospect, but in reality the line-up doesn’t quite tell the whole story.

This one was in fact a dark match, taking place after the Sep. 26, 2011 showing of Monday Night Raw. Admittedly the fact that it wasn’t televised makes it difficult to determine how great it really was, but that in itself suggests that this one was likely a missable affair.

Plus, the numbers don't lie; this was the shortest Hell in a Cell match in history, clocking in at a measly five minutes. So despite being one of the most populous Cell meetings on record, for its relative anonymity and its disappointing brevity, it makes sense to rank this one at the bottom of the pile.
