Rey Mysterio Not Cashing WWE Checks - Is He Done?

Rey Mysterio is a former one time WWE Champion and two time World Champion in WWE that is near the end of his in-ring career. According to a report by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the end may be near because Mysterio is apparently refusing to cash the checks that WWE has sent him. As we have mentioned before, WWE automatically extended Mysterio's contract for another year because of a clause that allows them to do that if a talent misses a certain amount of time due to injuries. Mysterio has missed a significant amount of time in the last three years due to injuries, mostly to his knees. There are still concerns whether or not Rey will be returning to action for WWE. Since it's unlikely that WWE would push him heavily again it makes sense that he wants out. We don't know it as fact, but if he's not cashing his checks then it's one of those things where we say that if there's smoke there's fire. It's likely that he does want to move on. If you're wondering why WWE still sends checks instead of something like direct deposits, it's because the payouts are not consistent from week to week. Guys may get bonuses for certain things (live events, merchandise, DVD sales, etc.) so their checks may be different. Mysterio likely feels that if he left WWE he could have a successful run wrestling for AAA in Mexico and there's also a AAA wrestling show coming to the USA. Mysterio could be positioned as a top guy in that promotion. His good friend, former WCW star Konnan recently tweeted "WWE #FreeRey" likely because he knows about his situation and that Mysterio wants out of WWE. For his part, Mysterio has stayed silent. He's not a heavy social media user and hasn't done interviews either. In the past he has said that he was always going to be a WWE guy, but that was when he was actually on television. Those feelings may have changed. If Mysterio wanted out of WWE there's a chance that they would allow it to happen because he's not being used. However, they may see value in keeping him around just because he's popular with kids who might want to buy his mask. It's also something he really has to think about because if he leaves WWE he's going to walk out on potential merchandising opportunities. It may delay a thing like a Legends deal and Hall of Fame induction when he retires, but like we've seen with so many others it's very likely that he'll be welcome back at some point. Mysterio's had a great career and was one of the most influential wrestlers especially in the late 1990s in WCW when he was doing things in American wrestling that we haven't seen before, but he may be done as a WWE performer.
