Rey Mysterio Gives Verdict On Potential Match With WWE's AJ Styles
Is he up for it?
Rumours that WWE are exploring the possibility of matching current WWE Champion AJ Styles and lucha libre legend Rey Mysterio for a one-off match received extra fillip this weekend, after the latter responded to the company's Twitter account on the subject.
In WWE's latest 'Fantasy Warfare' video, the group posited the possibility of AJ and Rey clashing, asking in a Tweet: "How fast would you buy your ticket to see [AJ Styles] go toe-to-toe with former World Heavyweight Champion [Rey Mysterio]?"
That former champ himself stoked the fire with his reply: "Can't answer on how fast to buy tickets, but what I can answer is on how fast would I accept.... Right Away!!"
Rey has made no secret of his desire to step back between the ropes for WWE following his successful cameo at Royal Rumble 2018 - where he looked in his best physical shape in years. As of yet, nothing concrete has been arranged between the two parties, especially with Mysterio set for his NJPW bow opposite Jushin Liger come March. Clearly there is something in this, though. After all, the company doesn't have a habit of teasing matches they can't deliver, as anyone who regular watches SmackDown can att... oh.
If the fantasy conflict is to become reality, the most likely home for it will be 6 May's Backlash - comfortably clear of Rey's New Japan commitments and in need of a huge attraction as WWE forge ahead with dual-branded PPVs. Watch this space.
