Rey Mysterio Now Under WWE Contract Until May 2015

Vince McMahon has Rey Mysterio under contract for another year, with the extension of his deal coming in unique circumstances according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Mysterio's original contract was to have expired a few weeks ago, but this isn't so much a new one year deal, there was no option period for that in Mysterio's contract. What WWE have in fact done is claim that Mysterio owes them a year of missed ring time due to all the injuries he had in his last few years. WWE contracts are allowed to be frozen in the event of an injury. Mysterio has a very high downside guarantee, so he is well paid whether he's used on TV or not. The Observer points out that the WWE may not even bother to use Mysterio in a wrestling capacity over the next year. He is a physical liability due to his two decades in the business which have seen him wrestling a mostly unsafe style. WWE have been burned time and time again by investing time in Mysterio only for him to be injured before a storyline is complete. He is currently out of action with a hand injury. The problem is that WWE have a serious lack of depth on house shows. Mysterio has a level of fame and could help that side of the business. It should also be noted that if he plans to bow out next year he should really be invested in some sort of retirement match at WrestleMania 31. He has had a great career and he should really end it on a major note. The one year extension will expire in May 2015.
