Sheamus returned with a bang on Monday's episode of Raw, but the WWE stalwart has revealed via his official Instagram page that he came close to retiring from the ring just two short months ago. Thankfully, doctors were able to turn things around and the Irishman launched his comeback after all.

Things could've been very different though.

In a candid moment, Sheamus admitted to fans that he thought his in-ring career might be over for good. He was recovering post-neck surgery, but was still in a lot of pain. In fact, the former World Champ said his rehab was "slow, rough and unimaginably painful". Things didn't look great for him.

Sheamus ended his post by saying various "doctors, trainers and physios" managed to fix him up just enough to make his return. He's grateful for that, because it must've been agonising for the guy to contemplate retiring from the ring without making another splash.

"#thisiswhatwedo" was the hashtag Sheamus closed with.

There was some negative chatter surrounding his comeback on social media, but most fans are happy to see Sheamus on TV again. That'll be doubly true now people know the personal hell he went through post-surgery.
