WWE: 10 Most Shocking Unmaskings

Those times we met the man behind the mask and we could never look at them the same away again...

There have been many instances in WWE history where masks were used to humiliate wrestlers. In some cases, masks were used to protect the identity of a performer too. Sometimes they were done for blatant comedic purposes, which is certainly fine for a company that bills itself as sports entertainment. In the 50 year history of WWE, there have been some masked wrestlers. However, it's not like there have been that many or that they have been used in major storylines too often. Part of the appeal of a wrestler is their ability to make facial expressions. If fans can see a wrestler's face they can know if that person is happy, sad, angry, scared or whatever kind of reaction they are going for. The mask in pro wrestling is usually something that is common in Mexican wrestling. Men wear masks to protect their identity. Most of time the it's the babyface wrestlers that wear the masks. If they wear the masks for years, they could then put it on the line in a match and if they win that match they earn the respect of the fans. If they lost the match they could carry on as a babyface or perhaps it would lead to a heel turn. Losing your mask is a way of disrespecting somebody, so it works in a lot of ways. For this column, it's a look back at some of the masked moments in WWE history as well as a famous one from WCW too. In case you're wondering, "Juan Cena" isn't going to make it on this list. If you don't know what I'm referring to, that's what Cena's name was when he was fired from WWE during the Nexus angle and he was still wrestling at house shows except he had a mask on. Since it didn't make its way to TV, I'll leave it off this list. As an aside, you should see the movie Nacho Libre starring Jack Black. It's stupid at times, but there are definitely some funny moments along the way. Nacho never made it to WWE, though. Poor guy.
