WWE: 10 Wrestlers Whose Lives Were Ruined By Substance Abuse

10. Eddie 'Umaga' Fatu

umaga Edward Smith Fatu - known as Umaga - was an American-Samoan wrestler who was part of the Anoa'i wrestling family. He tagged with his cousin Matt as The Island Boyz and Three Minute Warning. He was originally known as Jamal but after a break with the WWE, he came back as Umaga in Raw and was unbeatable for quite a long time. He suffered his first defeat in January 2007 but subsequently became Intercontinental champion. He would hold the title twice, and he had many interesting feuds with the likes of Jeff Hardy and CM Punk. Fatu was released in June 2009 from the WWE due to a violation of the Wellness Policy. He refused to go into drug rehab. Before that, in 2007, Fatu had been exposed as obtaining a growth hormone called somatropin from an online pharmacy a couple of months after the WWE had outlawed that practice among its wrestlers. Unfortunately Fatu had a massive substance abuse habit that ended his potential and his life. In December 2009, Fatu was found with a river of blood coming out of his nostrils. He had suffered a heart attack and whilst being treated in hospital, suffered a second heart attack. This time he died. The cause of death was ruled as acute intoxication of hydrocodone, carisoprodol and diazepam (Valium). A life cut short by drugs at the age of 36.
