On June 2nd 2014, The Shield imploded from within. While this had been hinted at before Wrestlemania season, no one expected Seth Rollins to unleash this heinous attack on his fellow teammates. Seth Rollins joined Evolution by leaving Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose flat in the ring with a steel chair, in a set-up orchestrated by Triple H. To hell with the standard of excellence.
It’s fitting that the man known as “The Architect of The Shield” would ultimately be responsible for its dissolution. Rollins famously walked out on his teammates once before, but it’s obvious this is completely different. There was no tension, and the group was coming off its best showing ever by dispatching Orton, Batista and Triple H, in a clean sweep as this writer predicted.
After yelling expletives at the screen like most other wrestling fans, it became clear that this is the perfect move at the right time. The Shield have conquered all challenges, and established themselves as arguably the greatest faction ever. All 3 men are seriously over, and ending the group while they are hot falls in line with other turns in WWE history. Think back to Triple H turning on DX at Wrestlemania 15, or The Rock joining The Corporation. What more could The Shield accomplish? As WWE moves into the summer season, this shake-up could be the major summer angle they present each year.
While we are all sad to see The Shield as constructed end, it’s important to focus on what it means going forward. It’s been said countless times how each man is a future world champion or main eventer, now we’ll get to see it for ourselves. We have WWE Network (In The U.S at least) or Youtube if we want to relive their best moments. In the case of Seth Rollins, the future is now and the top spot is for the taking.
