WWE Network Offering $4.99 PPV Only Subscription?

Sounds like a bad idea, but WWE are doing market research on a cheap PPV deal.

WWE are surveying fans if they'd be interested in buying WWE Network pay per view shows at a $4.99 cost, reports PWInsider. The survey has been sent out to fans who cancelled their Network subscription. If the service launched, fans would be able to pay just for the monthly specials, saving money on the full Network subscription. Presumably this would garner some interest, as many fans do struggle to find time to watch the Network on-demand content. If you are a fan who only subscribes for the specials, of course you're going to cancel the $9.99 subscription and switch to a $4.99 PPV basis. But while WWE are smart to be thinking of ways to boost the under-performing Network subscriptions, cutting the cost and offering an abridged version of the service isn't the way to go. Think about what this says about WWE special events. A show that was worth $45 just a couple of years ago, is now worth as little as $4.99? WWE are devaluing their own product. Far from helping to keep paying fans, this move would only encourage more full Network cancellations. It is a ridiculously low price point, and once they've gone that low, it would be hard to charge more in the future. The reason WWE are thinking of changing the Network set-up is thought to be down to low subscription numbers. The exact number isn't known, but it is thought that subscriptions will have dropped dramatically since WrestleMania's 1.3 million subscribers. The latest Network number will be announced on Thursday. If it is bad, the company will likely announce changes at the same time.
