WWE News On Dean Ambrose's "Lunatic Fringe" Name

His nickname comes from ties to his hometown of Cincinnati.

If you watch WWE programming with any regularity then you know they're really pushing the "Lunatic Fringe" nickname for Dean Ambrose. It seems like Michael Cole says it way too much because WWE really wants the audience to get used to it. While Ambrose has earned the respect of fans for being a great talent, the nickname is definitely different than what we're used to. What's a Lunatic Fringe and why is Ambrose using it as a nickname? Thankfully, I received an email earlier today from a reader named Ryan that provided us with some info on it. "Here's some background info on Dean's nickname 'Lunatic Fringe' name. I would assume he had a hand in coming up with it and it would seem to be paying homage to his home town Cincinnati, Ohio where the main rock station in town since 1980 has gone by the nickname 'Lunatic Fringe' WEBN 102.7. You said you aren't thrilled with the nickname, so I thought maybe if you knew where it came from it might change your mind a little. I can definitely tell you he gets a lot love around here (Cincinnati) for it." Thanks for that info, Ryan. After a quick search at the WEBN 102.7 website, it turns that the info is correct. The slogan of the radio station is: "The Lunatic Fringe of American FM." Ambrose is from Cincinnati as Ryan mentioned, so it would make sense that he wants a name that represents his city. There's also a song called Lunatic Fringe by a band named Red Rider although we're going to run with the theory that it comes from Dean's local rock station. As for those of us that don't love the nickname like myself, we'll get used to it. Ambrose is a great performer and any time he's out there the show has a lot more energy. There are all kinds of nicknames in wrestling. Some of them work. Others don't. If Ambrose continues to win over the fans and is popular then you might start seeing more "Lunatic Fringe" signs at WWE events in the weeks and months ahead.
