WWE Raw Review: Looking At The “Cash for Gold Standard” Edition

WWE-Raw-logo Over the last few weeks, Raw has been very entertaining to say the least. With the rise of Daniel Bryan, the disintegration of the Punk- Heyman relationship and Kaitlyn and AJ battling it out, the show has felt more vibrant. However, even with all those elements still in play the show felt a little lackluster then in previous weeks. The show begins not with a recap of last week as has been customary for the last few months, but with a cold open with Vickie Guerrero. The managing supervisor announces the champion versus champion main event with Alberto del Rio and John Cena. This would lead to a showcase of great WWE and World Champions of their perspective eras. I like the pomp and circumstance of it all, but I think more often than not, regardless of how you hype the match it just doesn't matter like used to. If we didn't see these matches at least four times a year, maybe this would mean something. As the ominous red briefcase hangs above the ring, Daniel Bryan comes out to address the crowd as ladders surround the ring. The bearded battler puts over the fact that he defeated Randy Orton he will go on to be the WWE Title Money in the Bank Winner of the now titled All-Stars match. This of course brings out all the other competitors who say they will win as well. it was really standard for these kinds segments. Of course, there was no Rob Van Dam but he was put over nonetheless. In the end, the segment breaks down as Randy Orton nails Kane with an RKO as the rest of the field slowly backs away. I thought Daniel Bryan and CM Punk stole the show with their interactions as everybody else played in the background. If Bryan does not win in Philadelphia I will be very surprised. We see the first of many Wyatt family promos as well as a Buddy Rogers and Lou Thesz. The action begins with a six man rematch from this Friday's Smackdown as Christian and the number one contenders for the tag team titles battle Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. A great opening contest to start the show. Using teamwork the Shield comes out victorious in this encounter as Dean Ambrose gets the pin on Christian following an assist Seth Rollins. Two things here, they definitely seem to be building an Ambrose- Christian feud for some time in the future. And It was announced that officially the tag titles would kick off the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. I don't see twin brothers winning. But it should be a good match nonetheless. We go backstage and see Kane feeling the effects of the RKO from earlier as Daniel Bryan tries to console him saying he's sorry what happened both tonight and on Smackdown. Daniel says he's made it up to him tonight by making a match between Kane and Randy Orton for later on in the night. Kane is enthused until Daniel adds he is the special guest referee. Back to the ring, Dolph Ziggler without AJ or Big E accompaniment defeated Jinder Mahal In a glorified squash. Dolph getting the win Zigzag out of nowhere. After the match Slater and McIntyre to get revenge for their fallen comrade. However, The Show Off uses Bugs Bunny logic to take out the 3MB sending Slater into the steps after an impressive week and giving McIntyre a Zigzag for his efforts. Dolph celebrates on the announcers table. If this segment didn't tell you that Dolph was a babyface, you weren't paying attention. The wedge between AJ and Dolph was made more clear on commentary as they hinted at dissension between the two over the Divas Champions obsession with Kaitlyn. As much as I love the threesome of AJ, Big E and Dolph if the show off his to be seen as viable he has to the way from shenanigans. Dolph needs some serious clean wins over top talent to give him a true main event feel. We get a look at WWE Hall of Famers Bruno Sammartino and the King Harley Race on their perspective title reigns as WWE and the World Title. Then we are in Vickie Guerrero's office as she complains about the overbearing influence of the McMahon family when Triple H appears stopping here in mid sentence. Hunter says she's doing a good job. Vickie expresses her frustration in recent weeks with the whole situation. Triple H says just listen to him. Not a bad segment. This of course would bring in segments with Stephanie and Vince later on in the night, giving way to a mandatory performance review for Vickie next week on Raw. If history is any indicator, Guerrero is not long for the TV world of WWE. This will course bring the power struggle of the McMahon clan to the forefront. And if I have my guess, this will culminate in some kind of encounter at Summerslam. The thing that got me in these segments was the Vince character saying that a champion versus champion match should be left for pay-per-view when he is the head of creative and has done it multiple times. Definitely a shot at the Internet€ Oh wait, they don't read the Internet. Let's head back to the action and talk about Kane versus Randy Orton. There wasn't really that much this match as the real focus was Daniel Bryan as the referee using his power to give Kane an advantage and to victories on by disqualification the other by fast count. This furthers the storyline of Daniel thinking Kane is the weak link of the duo and adds animosity towards them going into Money in the Bank. This was good but considering we got last week, it pales in comparison. Daniel this time receives the RKO from Randy Orton for his behavior. (A side rant here€ Can WWE quit saying that John Cena was the only man who gave advance notice when he was cashing in Money in the Bank to the champion. There was one other guy, you may know him. The guy you have been promoting a television for the last few weeks€ Rob Van Dam. Now that Rob is back in the fold can we fix that because it drives me nuts.) We do a jump cut to Paul Heyman and the Heyman guys are backstage discussing the animosity in the group. Punk says he can beat the Primetime Players by himself, he doesn't need any help from Axel. Heyman says doesn't understand that mindset the trusts Heyman, but not Curtis Axel. Heyman says he's just using his best judgment just like he did all those years ago with Punk in developmental and his best judgment is Axel is trustworthy Good segment€ Again not as good as last weeks. We see a video package looking at former champions and Hall of Famers Bob Backlund and Dusty Rhodes The dance floor is open once again as two more Money in the Bank competitors square off as Fandango returns with Summer Rae to battle Sheamus. I thought it was weird that a superstar that just came back from a concussion would battle someone with a finishing move that is a kick to the head. Luckily, Fandango did not feel the Brogue Kick. Instead Sheamus decided to do some Riverdancing. This was interesting to say the least and made anything that the former Johnny Curtis would do look like Fred Astaire. In the end. Sheamus wins by count out after Fandango decides his dance card is full for the time being. Chris Jericho joins the commentary team to watch his upcoming opponent at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view Ryback battle the Miz. Jericho was terrible on commentary, which is sad to say. The match itself was not much either as the guy Jericho termed Cryback this past Friday stops the match after the Miz actually works over the leg of Ryback setting up for the figure four leg lock. Jericho comes in after the match and hits the Codebreaker. It was announced that the Miz will battle Curtis Axel for the IC title at Money in the Bank . This is not a good way to elevate Axel given the Miz is persona non-grata. Oh and by the way might want to get a milk carton ( is that still a thing) forWade Barrett because he seemed to have gone missing. from this whole situation. I don't know what this is trying to do for Ryback, but one things for sure. I've never seen in that ending before but is that a good thing. I know they did a similar gimmick with Batista, how are you going to take the guy seriously. I usually don't say this, but Ryback better squash Jericho in Philly. Otherwise he'll be saying Ryback Rules back in developmental. Curtis Axel and CM Punk defeat the Primetime Players in a solid tag match. The story was Curtis Axel tagged himself in getting destroyed by the PTP while Punk is frustrated on the apron. Then when CM Punk gets tagged in he single-handedly destroys O'Neill and Young for Axel comes in and gets the pin. In the end as Axel celebrates Punk leaves frustrated. I have to say this Titus O'Neill is the king of trash talk . This made the segment all the more enjoyable as well as Heyman holding the Intercontinental title like a proud papa on the outside. This segment did what he needed to do. We see if video package showing the title reigns of Sting and Stone Cold Steve Austin ( I was surprised that it was not Goldberg paired with Austin considering you have a DVD coming up based around the superstar) After seeing an awesome career retrospective piece earlier in the night, Mark Henry does another excellent promo saying that he's competed for everyone else in the Olympics, and his beginnings in the WWE. He was a company guy, he wanted to do what was right for business. "They" didn't want him to be the WWE champion, not giving him fair opportunities at the title. After sixteen years, he doesn't care about the boys in the back, he doesn't care what "they think he will get their respect . After all his sacrifice away from his family and his time he deserves the WWE title and his going to take it at Money in the Bank and he promises to kick John Cena's ass Kaitlyn defeated Alicia Fox using a spear while Layla is all smiles on the outside. AJ appears showing off a rather rotund doctored photo of Kaitlyn. This was the weakest of all these segments thus far. Next up, we get another battle of participants in Money in the Bank matches as Cody Rhodes with Damien Sandow battles Antonio Césaro with Zeb Colter and the returning from his recent appearance in Mississippi Court, Jack Swagger. Both sides do promos. Rhodes and Sandow they won't let competition get in the way of their friendship. As Colter discusses the recent decisions of government involving privacy, the state of marriage and illegal aliens in the US. Yeah, because immigration is it bad enough you have to go into homophobia too (Facepalm). Anyway, the match itself was strange as the crowd didn't know to get behind. It was over quick as Antonio hit the Neutralizer which I assume will be changed the Naturalization playing off the immigration stance. They played up dissension between Sandow and Rhodes after the match. I can honestly see Antonio winning the World Title Money in the Bank after Jack works together with him during the match. Interesting that it could be back the original plan of having Jack battle Antonio down the line- All American American versus Real American with Colter turning on Swagger. Then we see probably the worst segment of the night as the Total Divas cast is backstage for a little meeting in the Bella twins are laying down their wrath on the new girls. The other divas attempt to come to the rescue but it just turns into a really bad segment. Interesting. They mention the fact that AJ and Kaitlyn are not on the show but yet are battling for the crown jewel of the Divas Division. You gotta love WWE logic. Of course, given how terrible this was I think AJ and Kaitlyn are the lucky ones. Three weeks until the show premieres and I got a feeling things are going to get much worse from here. In the main event, John Cena defeats Alberto del Rio after distraction from Dolph Ziggler causes Alberto del Rio to be put in the AA for the pin. Mark Henry who also made his way down to the ring during the match, the WWE championship from ringside and lays it at the feet of John Cena. Cena's trepidations but grabs the title and exits the ring but the shows not done yet.The show actually ends with a promo for the Wyatt family will debut next week on television. If this does not quell anybody's fears on the future of Bray Wyatt and crew then I don't know what will. Overall, the show was solid. I didn't feel it had the same wow factor as in previous weeks, but it wasn't bad. Ill be interesting to see what happens next week with the performance review of Vickie Guerrero and the debut of the Wyatt family. I don't imagine we'll see too many matches considering the WWE crew will be returning from an exhausting tour of Japan next week. So expect to see a lot of talk leading into Money In The Bank.
