Is SmackDown GM set for return to ring?

It's the story that just won't go away. Along with a potential Undertaker return (which has morphed into some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy) and Hulk Hogan's forgiveness (which thanks to the unexpected intervention of The Fabulous Moolah hasn't), speculation about the forcibly retired Daniel Bryan returning to action seems to surface at least once a month.

Ahead of WrestleMania 34, and a possible role in-ring opposite his year-long adversary Shane McMahon, the topic is once again on the lips of wrestling fans, with the beloved Bryan himself stoking the fire with repeated comments on the subject.

Whilst in the UAE on Sunday to visit the Special Olympics IX Mena Games, the SmackDown General Manager spoke with Abu Dhabi news outlet The National on various issues - including whether he'll be allowed to pull the tights back on in New Orleans.

"I don't know and I don't think they know, " Bryan opined. "I think it all depends on whether or not I get cleared. As of this moment, as of today, I am not cleared by WWE."

The former American Dragon went on further to say that the chances of him being cleared have improved thanks to some of his unconventional treatments, noting that "so far every doctor has cleared me that they have sent me to, and so there is a chance."

He concluded with a bit of gibberish: "With how everything is, there is one way to go if I don't get cleared and then there is another way to go if I am cleared. I'm hoping to be cleared, but I don't know which way it goes."

In any event, Bryan remains categorically unable to compete for WWE until their own medical team give him the green light. Given the extent to which a comeback for the World's Strongest Vegan would motivate interest in the upcoming supershow, one suspects WWE would have reversed their decision already if it were to happen. Check back for more inevitable hot air on this never-ending story in ooh, a day or two.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
