3. Tony Invents A New Element - Iron Man 2

When Iron Man was a huge success Marvel rushed development on a sequel so they could cement their cinematic universe. That’s a sound business plan, but it meant rushing a script and shoehorning in Avengers references wherever possible; which isn't a great approach to telling a story.

A key subplot finds Tony slowly being poisoned by the palladium core of his arc reactor, so Nick Fury sends him some of his dad’s old stuff. This is how Tony finds a film from his father and his plan he had to create a new element, which he couldn’t achieve with the technology of the time. Tony has no such issues, so in the space of an afternoon, he creates a brand new element to power his reactor core.

There’s lazy screenwriting, and then there’s “he creates a new element.” The story clearly took second priority to establishing the MCU in this outing, and this sloppy get out of jail twist is a real groaner.
