Doctor Who: 10 Unanswered Questions From The Revived Series

1. Why Does The Twelfth Doctor Look Like Caecilius?

Because he wants to? Because Caecilius' face left a lasting impression on him? Because it actually was the Twelfth Doctor posing as a marble trader in 79 AD Pompeii? Nobody knows quite for sure why the Twelfth Doctor looks like that bloke from Series 4 and the programme itself has yet to provide us with any concrete explanation. This is all narratively speaking, of course. Doctor Who fans can be a deluded bunch at the best of times but even they can grasp the basic concept that Peter Capaldi is an actor playing different characters in a TV show. It's not unusual for Doctor Who guest stars to be reinstated in a bigger part, though. Usually it's a small case of an actor going from one line to multiple lines but when it's an individual being brought back as the Doctor himself, it's much more difficult to ignore. Peter Capaldi is actually the second actor who was brought back as the titular Time Lord after Colin Baker played a Gallifreyan guard before being cast as the Sixth Doctor in 1984. In that instance it was suggested that the Doctor's new faces are determined by his subconscious and it might turn out that it's the same for the Twelfth Doctor, too. Let's not forget, though, that Peter has left another mark on the Whoniverse as John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth. The Doctor never met him which somewhat debunks that aforementioned theory. Besides, surely coming up with some sort of clever pretence to link the worlds of three unrelated characters is a narrative opportunity that's just too good to miss? They've already come up with an explanation, too. According to Steven Moffat, Russell T Davies emailed him when Peter Capaldi was cast as the Doctor to share his own theory as to why so many people seem to have his face within the Whoniverse. It certainly sounds intriguing but will it ever see the light of day? As always, only time will tell. But why oh why does it have to tell it so slowly!? And in the right order...
