Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST
57. The Cage - Mid 2250s/Mid 2260s
The first uniform ever seen on-screen in Star Trek was a soft fabric style, split between three division colours. Command wore gold, while the Science division wore blue. The Operations division wore a copper-brown colour, as seen on Yeoman Colt.
On the mission to Talos IV in 2254, the Enterprise crew were seen wearing these variants. This style was vastly different from that seen aboard ships like the Shenzhou and, later, the Discovery. They were designed by William Ware Theiss, who designed many of the uniforms featured on this list.
This 'gold' Command uniform, as well as the redesign that immediately followed, was, in fact, lime-green in fabrication, though on-set lighting and recording gave this golden hue. The earliest versions were made from a satin velour material, which was phased out as The Original Series progressed.
A variant of the uniform was seen in Where No Man Has Gone Before and The Corbomite Manoeuvre, adding a zipper to the shoulder and neck, which means that Starfleet returned to this style after several updates and variations. This, according to The Making Of Star Trek, was to help Leonard Nimoy remove the tunic without affecting his Vulcan make-up. In addition to this, there was also a high-collared variant worn by Colt and Doctor Dehner.
