17. Captain's Casual Jacket - 2368

For The Next Generation's fifth season, and at the suggestion of Patrick Stewart, a new jacket was introduced for Captain Picard. It may have been unique as he is the only character seen wearing it, but costume designer Robert Blackman took inspiration from contemporary Naval officers.

He knew that some Navy captains had a jacket they might wear while on duty, though not specifically the same as the rest of the uniformed officers. For its first appearance in Darmok, this jacket had leather shoulders, sitting atop a suede body and sleeves. For later appearances, this shoulder section would be closer in material to the rest of the jacket.

It was worn open over a grey and black undershirt that was similar in design, at least in the top half, to the provisional ensign's uniform seen in The Next Generation and Lower Decks.
