Star Trek: Every Starfleet Uniform Ranked From WORST To BEST

6. Starfleet Standard Uniform Mid 2360s/Early 2370s

For The Next Generation's third season, Robert Blackman adapted William Ware Theiss's early designs, creating a new two-piece uniform to be worn by the primary cast. This was in conjunction with the first and second season jumpsuits, which were still used in the third season by extras.

The early version of the updated look had a distinctive pair of lines down the chest, though these were quickly removed as the show went on. In Ensign Ro, this new uniform was shown to have an undetectable fastening in the front, revealing a division-specific undershirt beneath.

For The Next Generation, Command and Operations/Security had swapped colours, so the Captain now wore red, while the security chief and the chief engineer wore gold. Medical staff and sciences still wore blue.

This uniform remained in service for the rest of the 2360s and could be seen in use in the 2370s, though it was gradually phased out in preference for the new gray/black uniforms introduced in Star Trek: First Contact. Several variations were seen as other timelines popped up. In Yesterday's Enterprise, the standard duty uniform was revised, adding an equipment belt, black cuffs to the sleeves, and a higher collar. This snuck into the prime timeline as Geordi La Forge is seen wearing one at the episode's close.
