10 Things That Didn't Go The Way WWE Wanted
4. The Great Khali's Main Event Push
Standing over seven feet tall and billed at over 400 pounds, The Great Khali was destined for success in the proverbial "land of the giants".
Sure enough, he was rather successful at first. He squashed then-World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio, pinned The Undertaker with only one foot, and captured the World Heavyweight Championship in a Battle Royal on SmackDown in 2007. After all, who could possibly eliminate a giant? (Note heavy sarcasm.)
Unfortunately for Khali, his limitations were evident right away. His push was met with fervent vitriol from fans, who were not shy to remind him of his shortcomings. Sensing the fans' aversion of Khali's spot in the main event, he dropped the title to Batista two months after winning it.
Although he continued to feud with Batista and John Cena for the company's two top prizes, Khali would never again touch the gold (or any gold, for that matter). He slid down the card quicker than an elephant on a sled, became the "Punjabi Playboy," and was never taken seriously again.
So, instead of being an Andre the Giant-esque monster heel like WWE wanted, he ended up being more like a Giant González-esque punchline of a monster heel.
