10 Worst WWE Championship Reigns Of The 1990s

In 1977, Sgt. Slaughter had his first match for the WWE Championship. 14 years later, he finally won it.

At the 1991 Royal Rumble, the real-life army man (who was later found to have lied about his involvement with the military) defeated The Ultimate Warrior to capture the shiniest of trinkets. This unexpected rise to the top had come off the back of Sarge turning his back on America to side with Iraq, the country's real-life enemies in the ongoing Gulf War. The plan was to drum up enough patriotic sentiment so that 'Real American' Hulk Hogan could bring the title 'back home' at WrestleMania VII. Instead, all it did was make people incredibly uncomfortable and lead to one of the worst Mania main events of the era.

Slaughter's heel turn is one of the most notorious in wrestling history. It didn't help that the Sarge, who was in his early 40s at the time, couldn't actually wrestle.

The matches were bad, the storyline was even worse, and the whole thing was done to serve one man who didn't need anybody's help in stealing the main event spotlight.

An all-time clanger.
