101 Shocking Wrestling Plans You Won't Believe Almost Happened
8. Linda Conspires To Murder Her Husband
WWE shelved their dramatic Vince McMahon limo explosion death storyline in the summer of 2007 once gritty details of the Chris Benoit double murder and suicide hit the headlines. Behind the scenes, Vince was telling people that he 'couldn't be on TV if he was dead'. The boss wanted to wave goodbye to his onscreen duties, at least for a while.
Incredibly, one of the jotted down outcomes for a subsequent 'Who Killed Vince?!' plot line was that Linda McMahon orchestrated it. In effect, she murdered her own husband to get him out of the way and gain control of the entire operation. Then, it'd be revealed that Vince had actually left WWE to his illegitimate son Mr. Kennedy.
Cue gasps, shock, and probably someone saying: 'Swerve, bro'.
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were supposed to contend this and claim that they had rightful ownership, not Linda. This would've somehow led to Hunter vs. Kennedy at WrestleMania XXIV, with the biggest left turn coming when Vince revealed that he'd faked his own death, then planted evidence to incriminate Linda before handing the keys to the kingdom to Kennedy.
Quite why he'd want to do this is anyone's guess; it likely would've caused one of those 'nothing to see here' moments from creative once they pondered the story and realised they didn't have a suitable ending. 2007's biggest running storyline was cancelled due to the fallout from the Benoit tragedy anyway.
Linda didn't become a would-be murderer, and Vince returned to TV then launched into the Hornswoggle contingency.
