11 Things We Learned From Triple H On Cody Rhodes' Podcast
4. Hunter’s Reaction To Cody’s AEW Throne Spot
Those who watched it will never forget Cody Rhodes bringing a hammer down on a decidedly Triple H-esque throne at AEW's Double Or Nothing 2019 pay-per-view. That came across like a real shot across the bows which would perfectly launch All Elite Wrestling into view as a true alternative to the WWE machine, and it released some pent up anger on Cody's part.
Or, did it? On the podcast, he and Hunter spoke about that moment, and it appears there wasn't as much venom behind it as some might think. Countless people in WWE brought the clip to Triple H to show him. His reaction? “Good for him - that’s the kind of s*** you to do when you try to make a name for yourself”. He definitely didn’t think there was much, if any, malice in it really. If he had, then he says he’d have called Cody to ask if they were alright.
Back in 2016, Hunter claims he wanted to tell Rhodes to go make a name for himself elsewhere, but couldn’t outright say that because of his position in the company and who his family is. Cody revealed that HHH did tell him to "go rattle the cages” at the time.
On the throne spot (which Rhodes brought up here), Cody says there was no malice, but “the optics of wrestling” at the time meant going after Hunter was the right move. Cody joked that maybe Triple H is playing the long game on revenge, and Hunter said he knew it wasn't his throne because his hammer is bigger than Cody's.
